We monitor and fact-check media coverage of human trafficking and share the top cases with you from each week. A broad view of what is happening across the country can be translated into action, allowing us to collectively change the system and the public narrative.

We appreciate the recent focus on child sex trafficking on social media, but let’s make sure we’re leaning on the facts and real cases.

California Human trafficking investigation leads to arrest of man who paid 15-year-old for sex act Officers pulled over the man and woman for not having license plates and noticed the girl sitting in the back seat. The investigation revealed both the male and female adult suspects were trafficking the female juvenile victim. A portion of our training curriculum is how to spot human trafficking during traffic stops.  Law enforcement at all levels will likely encounter traffickers, and their victims on traffic stops, and calls for service.  Knowing what to look for is key.

Connecticut Bristol Man Charged with Attempting to Sex Traffic Minor, Distributing Child Pornography In November 2020, an undercover FBI employee began interacting with a man on a social media application. In the chats, the potential trafficker made statements that he had sexually abused children, and that he had trafficked a child to engage in commercial sex acts.

Florida Pair Facing Charges in Miami-Dade in Sex Trafficking of Teen Girl: State Attorney The victim met a potential trafficker through a dating social media platform, and he allegedly began grooming the victim by making her believe he was interested in having a romantic relationship with her.

We often have a predisposed idea as to what a trafficker looks like, and sometimes it isn’t what we think.

Ohio  Northeast Ohio doctor pleads guilty to sex trafficking six children Prosecutors say Aiad-Toss, 52, had six victims ranging in age from 12 to 15 years old. Texas A Pair of men in jail following Shenandoah sex trafficking sting In October of 2020, Collective Liberty provided training at the Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Headquarters, which was attended by many of these departments, including these District Attorney’s Offices. It’s wonderful to see that not only were traffickers held accountable, but victims of trafficking weren’t arrested. Congratulations to one of our favorite partners, Texas DPS CID for spearheading this case.

Nevada  Henderson firefighter, 5 other men arrested in child sex sting An officer posed as a 15-year-old juvenile and posted prostitution advertisements online. The suspects reached out to the phone number listed on the advertisement and communicated with the undercover officer.

Oklahoma Two Men to Serve More Than Fifty Years Combined in Federal Prison for Sex Trafficking of Teenagers Public records reflect both men paid to have sex with a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl. Upon their release from prison, both men will be required to register as sex offenders.

Utah 3 people arrested at airport in Utah County massage parlor raids “I want to make it clear, we are not interested in pursuing charges on her. She is a true victim who has been forced and coerced into doing these criminal acts,”  said American Fork Police Lt. Josh Christensen. We cannot arrest potential victims and then expect their cooperation in criminal cases. These arrests also limit survivors’ options; victims often cannot obtain housing, livable wages, and other basic needs with arrests and convictions on their records.

At Collective Liberty, we use a multi-pronged approach to the very complex issue of human trafficking. To help alleviate some of those vulnerabilities with every donation of $50 or more, we are gifting face masks from the Mazahua indigenous community in Mexico. This community, which has relied heavily on the country’s tourism as their source of income, is more vulnerable than ever during the current pandemic. Support us as we support others

‘Sugar daddy’ dating site founder arrested twice amid prostitution in Malasia “The initial arrest centered on alleged prostitution on the site, which openly bragged about getting thousands of university students to sign up as “sugar babies” for their “fully loaded” rich men.” Human trafficking not only occurs within hotels, in homes, or on the streets but also can be facilitated over the internet across the world.
